The Issue

 Jerry Kpesenu A.K.A. Maya was brutally murdered in cold blood by Jeremiah Osabutey and Eric Asante both police officers at the Keta Police Station, Wasiu Abubakar an electrician and Godwin Bedzra a tenant of Maya on Wednesday, 5th June, 2024.

This senseless act of violence has left a community grieving and calling for justice. We cannot stand by and allow such injustices to continue.

The facts are that;

On Wednesday, the 5th of June, 2024 at about 5:00pm Jerry Kpesenu A.K.A Maya, a landlord in Dzelukope had an issue with an electrician Wasiu Abubakar who was hired by a tenant Godwin Bedzra to work on an air-conditioner in the house without prior notice to him the landlord. Wasiu  took two policemen from the Keta Police Station, Jeremiah Osabutey and Eric Asante in his car to Maya’s house and they together brutally beat, kicked, booted, tied, dragged and hauled Maya into Wasiu’s car and took him to the Keta Police Station where he was further dragged and assaulted, put in the bathroom of the cells and the shower opened on him. That same evening at about 7 to 8pm, the police took Maya to the Keta Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. This means that Maya died in unlawful police custody in the Keta Police Station having been murdered by Godwin Bedzra the tenant, Wasiu Abubakar, the electrician and his workers and the two policemen Jeremiah Osabutey and Eric Asante. Eye witnesses’ testimonies prove that Maya was murdered by the two policemen, the electrician and the tenant by implication.

We demand:

  1. The immediate arrest and prosecution of
    i. The four persons mentioned above and
    ii. The Officer who assigned the policemen who murdered Maya.
  2. . Paying of due compensation to the family.

Why This Matters:

Maya’s death is not just a personal tragedy; it is a stark reminder of the issues of police brutality and lack of accountability that plague our society.
