The Issue

Mackenzi Felmlee was 18 when she died—bruised, emaciated, and struggling to breathe—in a state-licensed foster home outside St. Louis.

She had been in the custody of Illinois DCFS for nearly five years. Despite repeated reports of abuse from children in the home, Mackenzi remained there until her death.

Now, more than a year later, DCFS is refusing to release its timeline or investigative findings—even though Illinois law requires the agency to publicly report what went wrong when a child dies in its care.

Mackenzi's foster mother and grandmother have been indicted for murder and abuse, but the agency charged with protecting Mackenzi has told the public to wait, possibly for years.

We can’t fix what we can’t see.

We’re demanding that Illinois DCFS release the full report on Mackenzi’s death—including a timeline of visits, safety checks, and abuse complaints—as required by state law. Lawmakers created this transparency rule because hiding these failures costs lives.

The system failed Mackenzi. It cannot be allowed to fail in silence.

Sign to demand the truth—and accountability for what happened to her.
