On Thursday, April 18, 2024 local media reported that a 7 year old, special needs, IPS 87 student had been abused at the hands of his teacher. This abuse had taken place several months prior and the administration chose to not disclose this tragedy to the IPS 87 parents, including the parents of the other students who witnessed the abuse take place. Due to these failings, it is the demand of the following parents and community members that Principal Kapcoe be removed from her position at GWC 87 immediately. Any trust between the school administration and parents in our community is irreparably broken. We additionally request the following: 

1. A thorough investigation by a third party into who in the building had knowledge of the happenings in Johnican's room and didn't report it to DCS.

2. Mental health services for every child who was in Johnican's (the teacher who committed the abuse) class. 

3. A comprehensive plan for how a new administration will keep anything like this from happening to our children in the future. 

4. A town hall meeting for GWC parents to express our concerns, outrage, and demands in person.

5. An extension to the lottery deadline (April 19th) for those families who intended to return to GWC 87 next year and now do not feel safe in doing so. 

El jueves 18 de abril de 2024 noticias locales informaron que un estudiante de 7 años, con necesidades especiales, IPS 87, había sido abusado por su maestra. Este abuso había ocurrido varios meses antes y la administración decidió no revelar esta tragedia a los padres de IPS 87, incluidos los padres de los otros estudiantes que presenciaron el abuso. Debido a estas fallas, los siguientes padres y miembros de la comunidad exigen que el director Kapcoe sean removidos de sus puestos en GWC 87 de inmediato. Cualquier confianza entre la administración de la escuela y los padres de nuestra comunidad se rompe irreparablemente. Solicitamos adicionalmente lo siguiente:

1. Una investigación exhaustiva realizada sobre quién en el edificio tenía conocimiento de lo sucedido en la habitación de Johnican y no lo informó al DCS.

2. Servicios de salud mental para cada niño que estuvo en la clase de Johnican (el maestro que cometió el abuso).

3. Un plan integral sobre cómo una nueva administración evitará que algo como esto les suceda a nuestros niños en el futuro.

4. Una reunión pública para que los padres de GWC expresen nuestras preocupaciones, indignación y demandas en persona.

5. Una extensión de la fecha límite de la lotería (19 de abril) para aquellas familias que tenían la intención de regresar a GWC 87 el próximo año y ahora no se sienten seguras al hacerlo.
