MAJOR UPDATE: The Victorian Government is moving to close the police injury loophole

To everyone who signed, shared and supported this petition — we have received some very significant news.

The Herald Sun has reported that the Victorian Government is now moving to reform the law that has prevented injured Victoria Police officers from pursuing common-law damages on the same footing as other Victorian workers.

According to the report, the Government, The Police Association Victoria and WorkSafe are now working on legislative changes to address the loophole, with reforms currently being drafted.

Police Association secretary Wayne Gatt has confirmed that the Association has received assurance that the Government intends to pursue legislative reform to improve police members’ access to common-law damages.

This is exactly the injustice this petition was created to highlight.

When this campaign began in October 2025, we called on the Victorian Government to close a legal loophole that left sworn police officers facing an additional and deeply uncertain legal barrier when seeking compensation for serious workplace injuries.

Almost 4,900 people have now signed this petition.

Every person who signed helped send a simple message: police officers who are injured protecting the Victorian community deserve the same fundamental access to justice as other workers.

The fact that legislative reform is now being drafted is therefore an enormously encouraging development.

But our campaign isn’t finished yet

An intention to change the law is an important milestone — actually changing the law is what matters.

We now need to see the legislation introduced, passed and implemented in a way that genuinely protects injured police officers.

There are also important questions that will need to be answered, including exactly how the legislation will operate and whether the reforms will protect officers whose claims have already been affected by this legal uncertainty.

Until we see the legislation itself, we will continue advocating for a clear and comprehensive solution.

Our police run towards situations most of us would run from. When they suffer serious physical or psychological injuries as a result of their service, they should not encounter a legal technicality that denies them the protections afforded to other Victorian workers.
