Justice for Harshandeep: Closing Loopholes That Let Violence Thrive in Our Communities

Justice for Harshandeep: Closing Loopholes That Let Violence Thrive in Our Communities
The Issue
We, the undersigned, demand that the Canadian government take immediate action to strengthen the bail system and ensure the safety of our communities.
The recent tragedy involving Harshandeep, a young man from our community, highlights the urgent need for reform. Harshandeep was tragically killed by a repeat offender who was out on bail despite a history of violent crimes. This senseless loss could have been prevented if stronger measures were in place to keep dangerous individuals behind bars.
The Key Problems:
- Repeat Violent Offenders: While recent changes to the law (Bill C-48) aim to keep repeat offenders in jail, there are still gaps that allow dangerous people to be released too easily.
- Weapon Offenses: Those charged with crimes involving firearms, knives, and other weapons often avoid the strict bail rules they should face. Even with changes to the law, certain offenders can still find ways out.
- Intimate Partner Violence: Repeat offenders of intimate partner violence are still being released, putting victims at risk.
Why This Matters:
Harshandeep’s death is a reminder that the current system isn’t doing enough. Our communities deserve better. We cannot afford to wait another five years for reviews—we need stronger enforcement of the new rules NOW.
What Needs to Happen:
- Full Enforcement of Bail Changes: These reforms must be fully implemented to keep violent offenders off the streets.
- Tougher Loophole Closures: We need stronger safeguards against repeat offenders and criminals who exploit gaps in the system.
- More Frequent Reviews: The government should commit to regular reviews of the bail system to ensure it’s working.
We cannot let another life be lost. Stand with us to demand immediate action to close the gaps in our bail system and protect Canadians like Harshandeep.
