Justice for Halyna

Justice for Halyna
The Issue
Halyna was shot and killed on the film set of RUST outside Santa Fe, New Mexico on Oct 21st, 2021. Now that the Sheriff’s Office have completed their investigation, we want Santa Fe DA Mary Carmack-Altwies to know she has our full support seeking justice by holding accountable those responsible for Halyna’s death.
A Ukrainian immigrant who came to the United States with nothing but her dreams, Halyna possessed the qualities that destined her for a life of greatness in the entertainment industry. She was passionate about cinema, tenacious about executing her vision, kind, collaborative and profoundly gifted.
After she spent years graduating from the American Film Institute, perfecting her craft shooting several feature films and being selected as one of American Cinematographer's Rising Stars of 2019, all while balancing work life with being a mother, her life and career were tragically cut short.
On October 21st, 2021 outside of Santa Fe, New Mexico, while preparing for a scene on the film set of RUST, actor Alec Baldwin aimed and fired a Pietta Colt .45 revolver directly at Halyna at point-blank range. The bullet passed through her chest, fatally wounding her, before striking and injuring director Joel Souza. She died later that day after being airlifted to the University of New Mexico hospital in Albuquerque.
We, the friends, family, fellow members of the film community, and concerned citizens do not believe Halyna's death was an accident, but instead was the result of a pattern of reckless and careless behavior by the producers, and a foreseeable and preventable chain of events in which dozens of industry and guild safety protocols were ignored. These include, but are not limited to:
The aggressive cost-cutting measures by the Rust Production, especially when it came to safety.
The hiring of unqualified personnel with a history of safety violations on previous films.
The lack of safety meetings in order to save time prior to firearms being used on set.
The presence of multiple rounds of live ammunition scattered throughout the set and mixed in with fake dummy rounds.
Several accidental discharges of firearms had already occurred on the set prior to Halyna's death.
Reports of prop firearms from the set being used for target practice over the weekend prior.
The camera crew walked off the set that morning after repeatedly expressing their concerns over safety.
Unsafe handling of firearms on set by the armorer, assistant director, and the actor, including breaching the most basic rules for gun safety:
- ALWAYS treat your firearm as if it is loaded.
- NEVER point your firearm at anything you don't intend to destroy.
- NEVER place your finger on the trigger until ready to shoot.
- ALWAYS be aware of your target and what is beyond it.
- EVERY time a firearm changes hands, ALWAYS personally perform or observe a visual inspection of the weapon to ensure no ammunition is contained within.
A few careful seconds is all that was needed to spare Halyna's life.
Halyna died doing what she loved, making movies. She would have preferred her legacy was the films she made, the relationships she maintained, and watching her young son grow up. Instead her name will always be synonymous with safety on film sets.
As an industry of professionals responsible for each other's lives every day, we take safety very seriously. We were horrified and outraged by the facts of this case as they began to emerge.
It has been over a year since Halyna's death. We've been waiting patiently and respectfully for the Santa Fe County Sherriff's Office to conclude their investigation. Now that it’s completed, we want the Santa Fe District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies to know she has our full support in seeking convictions. By holding those responsible for Halyna's death accountable we hope to help ensure a terrible tragedy like this never happens again.
