Justice for Hafez Taher – Investigate as a Hate Crime and Protect Our Communities
🛑 SIGN THIS PETITION TO DEMAND ACCOUNTABILITY AND JUSTICE🛑
On Tuesday, in the Danforth and Monarch Park area of Toronto, Hafez Taher, a food delivery worker and newcomer to Canada, was intentionally struck by a man pushing an empty shopping cart while riding his e-bike. As a result, he suffered a broken arm, neck injury, and concussion.
Toronto Police have arrested the suspect and charged him with mischief endangering life. But for many in our community, this charge does not go far enough.
📍Why This Matters:
While the act may seem random, it happened immediately after the federal election, during a time when anti-immigration and anti-refugee rhetoric dominated parts of public discourse. If this act was motivated by bias, racism, or xenophobia, then it must be recognized and prosecuted as a hate crime — because the harm goes beyond one victim. It affects entire communities who now live in fear.
A hate crime sends a message: "You’re not welcome here."
Our response must send a stronger message: "We stand united against hate."
🔴 We call on the following elected officials to act immediately:
- Hon. Bill Blair, MP
- Hon. Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, MP
- Hon. Salma Zahid, MP
- Hon. Mary-Margaret McMahon, MPP
- Councillor Brad Bradford
- And all other elected officials representing Toronto and Scarborough
📝 Our Demands:
- Ensure the incident involving Hafez Taher is fully investigated as a potential hate crime
- Publicly condemn acts of hate and reaffirm a commitment to protecting immigrants, refugees, and racialized communities
- Support stronger anti-hate education, prevention policies, and community support services
✊ Let this be a precedent. Hate has no place in our streets, our homes, or our hearts. Let’s ensure that people like Hafez Taher are not left behind or forgotten.
📢 Sign the petition, share with your networks, and tag your MP, MPP, and Councillor. Together, we can demand justice.
