Justice for Esme
The Issue
Subject: Petition for Urgent Reform and Stricter Sentences for Drink and Impaired Driving
To the Members of Parliament and Legislative Representatives,
We, the undersigned citizens of Banbury and the wider community, call upon lawmakers to immediately strengthen sentencing guidelines and legislative penalties for drink driving and dangerous driving offenses.
Operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs is not a lapse in judgment; it is a reckless, preventable choice that devastates families and cuts short innocent lives.
A Local Tragedy: Remembering Esme Elizabeth Heaton-Biggs
Our community in Banbury is currently grieving the tragic loss of 18-year-old Esme Elizabeth Heaton-Biggs, who died following a fatal road traffic collision on Bloxham Road.Described by her family as a "funny, kind, stubborn, witty and beautiful human being" and "the spark" of her friend group, Esme had barely begun her life when it was taken away.
Esme’s tragic death highlights the harrowing reality of dangerous and impaired driving in our local streets. No family should ever have to endure the sentence of lifelong grief caused by another driver's decision to get behind the wheel while unfit to drive.
Key Demands for Legislative Reform
To honor victims like Esme and prevent further loss of life, we petition Parliament and lawmakers to enact the following measures:
1. Mandatory Tougher Minimum Custodial Sentences:Increase mandatory minimum prison sentences for drivers convicted of causing death by dangerous driving or driving while over the prescribed alcohol/drug limit.
2. Lifetime Driving Bans for Fatal Offenses:Implement lifetime driving disqualifications for offenders who cause fatal collisions while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
3. Strict Enforcement on Repeat & Disqualified Drivers: Introduce harsher penalties and immediate custodial terms for individuals caught driving while already disqualified or uninsured.
4. Closing Legal Loophole Pleadings: Restrict plea bargaining that allows severe charges of death by dangerous or drink driving to be reduced or given lenient suspended sentences.
Conclusion
Driving is a privilege, not a right. Protecting the public and securing justice for victims must be the law's primary obligation. We demand that lawmakers take drink driving seriously, update the sentencing guidelines to reflect the gravity of these crimes, and ensure offenders face consequences that match the devastating loss they inflict on families and communities.
