Justice for Clint McGowan: End Wrongful Convictions in Michigan

The Issue

I, Leigha McGowan, am writing this petition to bring attention to the grave injustice that has befallen my husband, who was wrongfully convicted and sentenced to natural life imprisonment in 2006. It is with a heavy heart and an unwavering belief in his innocence that I share our personal story.

My husband's life was forever altered when he was unjustly sentenced under Michigan's felony murder law. He had no involvement whatsoever in the crime, nor did he possess any knowledge of its occurrence. Yet, solely based on the testimonies of witnesses who received reduced punishments and with no other evidence, he was found guilty and condemned to a lifetime behind bars.

To shed light on the alarming circumstances surrounding his conviction, it is crucial to highlight two critical facts. Firstly, two of the witnesses who testified against my husband have since come forward and admitted their false testimonies were coerced through threats aimed at separating them from their children. This revelation underscores the extent of manipulation and intimidation that tainted my husband's trial.

Secondly, when one courageous witness attempted to rectify her previous falsehoods by speaking out about the coercion she endured, she faced renewed threats aimed at silencing her once again. This blatant disregard for truth-seeking not only perpetuates an egregious miscarriage of justice but also perpetuates a cycle where innocent lives are destroyed while true perpetrators remain free.

It is disheartening that our legal system failed my husband by allowing unreliable testimonies without proper scrutiny or consideration for potential ulterior motives. The consequences have been devastating not only for him but also for our entire family as we continue to endure this nightmare year after year.

This petition aims not only to seek justice for my husband but also serves as a call-to-action against wrongful convictions within Michigan's criminal justice system. We demand:

1) A thorough reinvestigation into my husband's case, taking into account the newly revealed witness testimonies and the coerced nature of their original statements.

2) The implementation of comprehensive safeguards to prevent future wrongful convictions, including a stricter scrutiny of testimonies.

3) Increased transparency and accountability within the criminal justice system to ensure that innocent individuals are not wrongfully convicted based solely on unreliable or coerced testimonies.

We urge you to sign this petition in support of my husband's fight for justice and to bring awareness to the urgent need for reform within Michigan's legal system. Together, we can make a difference by standing up against wrongful convictions and ensuring that no innocent person suffers behind bars.
