Chad Continues Fighting for His Right to Access the Courts

We want to thank everyone who has continued to support Chad and share his petition. While Chad’s appeal of the PCRA denial is now officially pending before the Pennsylvania Superior Court, he continues to face obstacles inside SCI Albion that make it difficult to prepare his own legal filings. Over the past several weeks: * The prison law library was cancelled because of institutional lockdowns. * Prison phones were also out of service during portions of this time. * Chad submitted written requests asking for additional law library access because he has active court proceedings and filing deadlines. * He filed a formal grievance explaining that the lack of legal resources interfered with his ability to research, prepare documents, and meet court deadlines. Despite these documented requests, prison officials denied his grievance, stating they found no evidence that additional law library time was necessary and concluded that his appeal should be denied. Ironically, after Chad filed the grievance, he was suddenly scheduled for law library access again—raising concerns that access became available only after he documented the problem. Meanwhile, Chad has continued working on his case. His Notice of Appeal to the Pennsylvania Superior Court has now been docketed, and he has also filed a motion concerning missing legal mail and preservation of the record. He remains determined to pursue every lawful avenue available to prove his innocence. This case has never been just about one filing. It is about ensuring that every person—especially someone representing themselves from prison—has meaningful access to the courts guaranteed by the Constitution.
