Just days before Christmas 2024, an 18-year-old Black Trans high school senior named Rue was brutally stabbed multiple times & robbed while exiting a METRO bus near Buffalo Bayou, resulting in a punctured lung.

Despite surviving this horrific attack, Rue remains in recovery, facing both physical and emotional trauma. The suspect was apprehended shortly after the incident, but justice is far from served. This violent crime was not just an attack on Rue—it was an attack on the safety and dignity of all Black Trans people.

We demand that the newly-elected Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare pursue hate crime charges to acknowledge the bias and prejudice that fueled this brutal act. Hate crimes threaten entire communities, and holding Rue's attacker fully accountable is a critical step toward ensuring safety and justice for marginalized groups.
