Justice for Animal Cruelty Victims: Make it a Felony Charge in Alabama!

The Issue

In August 2023, in Northeast Alabama, a horrifying incident of animal cruelty occurred that shook our community to its core. A defenseless horse was tied to an ATV and mercilessly dragged down an asphalt road. The pain inflicted on this innocent creature is beyond comprehension - her hooves were ground down to nearly nothing, her flesh ripped off her body, and she was left suffering in the middle of the road, injured and bleeding.

This heart-wrenching incident highlights the urgent need for change. We cannot stand idly by while such heinous acts of animal cruelty are treated as mere misdemeanors under current laws. It is time for Alabama to take a bold step forward by making animal cruelty a felony charge.

Animal cruelty is not just an issue that affects animals; it reflects on our society as a whole. Numerous studies have shown that individuals who commit acts of violence against animals are more likely to escalate their behavior towards humans as well. By treating animal cruelty as a felony offense, we can send a clear message that such acts will not be tolerated in our state.

According to data from the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF), only 45 states currently classify certain forms of animal abuse as felonies. Unfortunately, Alabama remains one of the few states where these crimes are still considered misdemeanors with minimal penalties.

Research conducted by psychologists and criminologists consistently demonstrates the link between animal abuse and other violent crimes. The FBI recognizes this connection and has included animal cruelty offenses in its National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) since 2016.

By upgrading the crime of animal cruelty from a misdemeanor charge to a felony charge, we can ensure that those who commit such atrocities face appropriate consequences for their actions. This change would act as both a deterrent and provide law enforcement agencies with stronger tools to combat animal cruelty.

Our neighboring states, such as Georgia and Tennessee, have already recognized the importance of treating animal cruelty as a felony offense. It is time for Alabama to join them in protecting our most vulnerable creatures and sending a clear message that we value the lives and well-being of all animals.

Sign this petition today to demand that Alabama's lawmakers take immediate action by passing legislation that elevates animal cruelty from a misdemeanor charge to a felony charge. Together, let us ensure justice for innocent animals who suffer at the hands of cruel individuals. Let us be their voice!

We have also started a GoFundMe account in an effort to raise funds to help get the laws in Alabama regarding animals cruelty changed to a felony. Funds will also be used to join like minded people together to educate the community about animals cruelty and how to avoid it from happening. Please consider donating any amount to this amazing cause. Blessings
