The Issue

My step daughter’s sibling, Josie, a brave and innocent 5 year old soul, was recently sexually assaulted by a 15-year-old. This horrendous act has devastated our families and turned Josie’s world upside down. However, to our shock and disbelief, the justice system seems to be steering this young offender away from jail time, citing 'rehabilitation goals' instead of delivering the justice Josie rightfully deserves.

This situation raises a terrifying question: who will advocate for Josie now? What message are we sending her by allowing her abuser to evade real consequences? Josie, like many other survivors of sexual abuse, deserves to see her abuser held accountable for their actions. As she grows, what will Josie think about the courts that were supposed to protect her rights and dignity but chose a path that ignores her trauma?

It's crucial for the justice system to balance rehabilitation with accountability, particularly in cases of sexual abuse involving minors. While the rehabilitation of young offenders is important, it should not overshadow the need for justice and healing for the victims.

Interestingly, it has been found that when offenders do not face appropriate consequences, they may continue to harm others. According to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN), perpetrators who are not adequately held accountable are more likely to reoffend, perpetuating a cycle of violence. Therefore, by ensuring appropriate consequences for offenders, we are not only doing justice to victims like Josie but also preventing potential future crimes.

We call upon the judicial system to reassess its handling of cases such as Josie's. We need fair consequences that reflect the severity of the crime and provide a semblance of justice to the victims. Let's work towards creating a safer environment where survivors know that their voices will be heard and their traumas acknowledged.

Join us in demanding justice for Josie and all young survivors by signing this petition. Together, we can make sure their voices are not silenced and that their abusers are held accountable.
