No worker should be punished for seeking justice and dignity at work. Yet in Malaysia, 177 Bangladeshi migrant workers at Mediceram Sdn Bhd – a supplier of gloves to major global brands – were terminated en masse after protesting exploitative conditions . We, the undersigned, call for immediate justice for these workers and urgent action from Mediceram, the Malaysian authorities, and international companies that buy from Mediceram to uphold labour rights and human dignity.

Background : Strike, Dismissals and Abuse

In late October 2025, around 177 Bangladeshi migrant workers employed at Mediceram – a Malaysian glove manufacturer – held a strike to protest the company’s failure to renew their work visas.

Instead of addressing the workers’ legitimate grievances, Mediceram retaliated by firing all of them on 31 October 2025. Company executives then reportedly tried to swiftly deport the workers: on November 4, some were forced onto a bus to the airport “literally crying” as they were driven away to be repatriated against their will.

At least ten workers were deported that day, with several more sent back later in November. The remaining workers were left in limbo and fear, under threats that they too would be summarily deported simply for standing up for their rights.

For months before this climax, these migrant workers had endured severe exploitation. Many paid exorbitant recruitment fees to secure their jobs in Malaysia, leaving them deep in debt. Once at Mediceram, they had their passports confiscated by the employer, and the company allowed their work permits to expire – effectively trapping them in irregular status. Dozens of men were crammed into overcrowded, sub-standard dormitories provided by the company, and workers reported wage theft, unrealistic production targets, and even bullying and physical violence by supervisors. It was against this backdrop of abuse and indignity that the workers finally decided to protest for their rights.

Even after the mass dismissals, the workers continued to seek justice through all available avenues. In mid-November 2025, a group of 93 of the sacked workers filed official police complaints in Malaysia, accusing Mediceram of illegally confiscating passports and breaching labour laws by failing to renew work permits. Around 150 of the workers also signed an open letter appealing for intervention: they pleaded not to be sent home, but rather to be allowed transfer to a new employer in Malaysia so they could continue to earn a livelihood. 

Meanwhile, in Bangladesh, families and supporters of the workers held solidarity protests, demanding that their loved ones be treated fairly and not deported unjustly.

Key Demands

We address the following demands to Mediceram Sdn Bhd, the Malaysian government, and the international client companies (such as Top Glove and Ansell) linked to Mediceram’s supply chain. These steps are the minimum required to remedy the injustices and prevent further abuse

• Transfer all dismissed workers to other employers in Malaysia with valid work permits.
• Immediately stop all forced deportations of Mediceram workers — and reinstate work permits for those already deported to Bangladesh.
• Conduct a full investigation into Mediceram Sdn. Bhd. for labour rights violations, deception and threats — and blacklist the company from hiring Bangladeshi workers.
• Pay all outstanding wages, overtime, and recruitment fees — including for workers who have already been deported.
• Ensure accountability and transparency from the Bangladesh High Commission, which has failed to protect its citizens and has been accused of corruption and negligence.
• Guarantee the safety, dignity and lawful employment of all affected workers.

ন্যায়বিচার চাই: মালয়েশিয়ায় মেডিসেরাম কারখানায় ১৭৭ জন বাংলাদেশি অভিবাসী শ্রমিকের জন্য

কোনো শ্রমিককে কখনও তাদের ন্যায়বিচার বা মর্যাদা চাওয়ার কারণে শাস্তি দেওয়া উচিত নয়। অথচ মালয়েশিয়ায়, মেডিসেরাম কোম্পানিতে কর্মরত ১৭৭ জন বাংলাদেশি অভিবাসী শ্রমিককে শোষণের বিরুদ্ধে প্রতিবাদ করার পর একযোগে বরখাস্ত করে জোর করে দেশে ফেরত পাঠানো হয়েছে। আমরা, এই বিবৃতির সাক্ষরকারীরা, মেডিসেরাম, মালয়েশিয়ান কর্তৃপক্ষ এবং আন্তর্জাতিক কোম্পানিগুলোর কাছে অবিলম্বে ন্যায়বিচারের দাবি জানাই — শ্রম অধিকারের সম্মান ও মানবিক মর্যাদা রক্ষার জন্য।

প্রেক্ষাপট: ধর্মঘট, বরখাস্ত ও নির্যাতন

২০২৫ সালের অক্টোবরের শেষে, মালয়েশিয়ার গ্লাভস উৎপাদনকারী কোম্পানি মেডিসেরামের প্রায় ১৭৭ জন বাংলাদেশি অভিবাসী শ্রমিক কোম্পানির কাজের ভিসা নবায়নে ব্যর্থতার প্রতিবাদে ধর্মঘটে অংশ নেয়।

কোম্পানি শ্রমিকদের বৈধ অভিযোগগুলো আমলে না নিয়ে, বরং তাদেরকে ৩১ অক্টোবর একযোগে বরখাস্ত করে। ৪ নভেম্বর, কিছু শ্রমিককে জোর করে এয়ারপোর্টে পাঠানো হয় — তখন তারা “কান্নারত অবস্থায়” ছিলেন কারণ তাঁদের ইচ্ছার বিরুদ্ধে ফেরত পাঠানো হচ্ছিল।

সেই দিন অন্তত দশজন শ্রমিককে ফেরত পাঠানো হয় এবং পরে আরও কয়েকজনকে। যারা থেকে গিয়েছিলেন, তারা আতঙ্কে ছিলেন — যে কোন মুহূর্তে তাঁরাও ফেরত পাঠানো হতে পারে।

এই বরখাস্তের আগেও শ্রমিকরা মাসের পর মাস চরম শোষণের শিকার ছিলেন: বিপুল পরিমাণ দালালি ফি দিয়ে চাকরি পেয়েছেন, পাসপোর্ট কেড়ে নেওয়া হয়েছে, ভিসার মেয়াদ শেষ হয়ে যাওয়ায় অনিয়মিত অবস্থায় পড়ে গেছেন, অমানবিক আবাসন, চুরি হওয়া মজুরি, ও শারীরিক নিপীড়নের মতো ঘটনা ঘটেছে।

ধর্মঘটের পর, ৯৩ জন শ্রমিক পুলিশের কাছে পাসপোর্ট জব্দের ও শ্রম আইন লঙ্ঘনের অভিযোগ করেন এবং ১৫০ জনের বেশি শ্রমিক একটি খোলা চিঠিতে আবেদন জানান যেন তাঁদের দেশে ফেরত না পাঠিয়ে মালয়েশিয়ায় অন্য নিয়োগকারীর অধীনে কাজ করতে দেওয়া হয়।

বাংলাদেশেও, শ্রমিকদের পরিবার ও সমর্থকেরা সংহতির বিক্ষোভ করে তাঁদের প্রিয়জনদের ন্যায্য ও সম্মানজনক আচরণ এবং নিরাপদ কাজের দাবি জানায়।

মূল দাবি

আমরা মেডিসেরাম, মালয়েশিয়ান সরকার, এবং মেডিসেরামের ক্রেতা আন্তর্জাতিক কোম্পানিগুলোর কাছে নিচের দাবি জানাই — এগুলো হচ্ছে ন্যায়বিচারের ন্যূনতম পদক্ষেপ:

• বরখাস্ত হওয়া সকল শ্রমিককে বৈধ ভিসাসহ মালয়েশিয়ার অন্য নিয়োগকারীর অধীনে কাজ করার অনুমতি দিতে হবে।
• মেডিসেরামের শ্রমিকদের জোরপূর্বক ফেরত পাঠানো বন্ধ করতে হবে এবং ফেরত পাঠানো শ্রমিকদের ভিসা পুনরায় চালু করতে হবে।
• শ্রম অধিকার লঙ্ঘন ও হুমকির অভিযোগে মেডিসেরামের বিরুদ্ধে পূর্ণ তদন্ত করতে হবে এবং কোম্পানিকে কালো তালিকাভুক্ত করতে হবে।
• সমস্ত বকেয়া মজুরি, ওভারটাইম ও দালালি খরচ পরিশোধ করতে হবে, এমনকি যারা ইতিমধ্যে ফেরত পাঠানো হয়েছে তাদেরও।
• বাংলাদেশের হাই কমিশনের জবাবদিহিতা নিশ্চিত করতে হবে, যারা অভিযোগ অনুযায়ী দুর্নীতিপূর্ণ ও গাফিলতির মাধ্যমে নাগরিকদের সুরক্ষায় ব্যর্থ হয়েছে।
• ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত সকল শ্রমিকের নিরাপত্তা, মর্যাদা ও বৈধ কর্মসংস্থানের নিশ্চয়তা দিতে হবে।
