It’s been a year since my last update. Now I can share the reality of this broken system because my case is now closed.
It took 2 years 3 months for charges to be brought against the perpetrator in my case. First court hearing would have been 31 months from time of reporting. He was charged with 4 counts of rape (one count spanning multiple rapes over a 2 year period) and 1 count of sexual assault by penetration.
I never got to court… the perpetrator took his own life following charges. I made complaints to both the cps and police.
None of this should have happened! This is the exact reality of a broken justice system which is failing victims of domestic violence and rape. Not only do survivors have to cope with the trauma of the abuse but then the retraumatisation of lengthy investigations and court dates years from reporting. It is unsustainable for victims dealing with ptsd, their lives on hold for years, financial loss from being unable to work and living in a prolonged state of fight or flight.
Many victims of abuse are giving up or not reporting at all. Perpetrators, abusers, rapists are continuing their lives, creating more victims whilst awaiting charges and trial.
The figures are shockingly rising! We have a moral duty of care to bring perpetrators to justice and support survivors. Women and children deserve to be safe, supported and protected.
Please, please share this petition so we can get it to parliament. I met with my local MP to discuss this issue and we need public support to push for change.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I am just one of thousands who have been failed and family torn apart.
