Since Jenny and Evan's murder, moments have turned to hours; hours to days; days to weeks; weeks to months and suddenly it became years. I don't know where the time went, but I still feel like it's February 2019. I feel like it was just moments ago when I was speaking to my beautiful Jenny. I dream about her often. I wake up in the reality and realize that it's two years and two months later, and she's not really here.
I'm reminded every day that Jenny and Baby Evan have been taken from us. We are reminded of this actually with every court date; there have been 21, if I count correctly. We are reminded of this with every visit to the cemetary. And we have to revisit this reality every time there is an adjournment. It's a terrible feeling and it's emotionally draining and anguish-filled. There is a sense of dread every time that court date comes up, because you know that it's going to get pushed out again. And it happens so fast. One moment you have very tiny hint of hope in your heart that something will come out of it, and then there is another adjournment. It happens so fast that one would think that it shouldn't have an affect emotionally; oh but it does.
I wish I could explain that awful feeling of being treated like a number. We're like cattle waiting to be branded. It's very robotic and it lacks the human element; that's the only way I can describe how it feels being caught up in this criminal justice [or lack thereof] structure. I feel trapped. And as a mother, I feel helpless, because I can't justice for my daughter and the baby. It's bad enough that the system doesn't consider the baby's life in all this, as I've said countless times before. But why do we have to drag this on so long? Is this really necessary?
Why do we have a judicial system like this anyway, where crimininal court cases literally take years to get resolved? I'm talking about pre-COVID. This is just the way the system has been. We were told from the beginning to brace ourselves for a long haul.
