A recent story in the Dallas Observer highlights updates in our quest to acquire justice for Brianna and Journi Baucum (link to the story: https://rb.gy/4yyzpx ).

Earlier this month, Drs. Catherine A. LaBrenz and Maxine Davis (UTA School of Social Work) wrote an open letter supporting reuniting Brianna Baucum with her daughter (Journi).  The letter states, “Unfortunately, Brianna’s case is reflective of the systemic anti-Black racism and bias present in systems that should support and preserve families," the professors wrote.

This month, Judge Bennett of Tarrant County asked the lawyers involved in CPS’s attempt to terminate Brianna’s parental rights the following question: ‘I really want to know what the bond is. I’m not here to go back and forth with what you guys’ perspective of her is. I want to know about the bond between Brianna and Journi.”  After hearing about the bond between Brianna and Journi, Judge Bennett ruled AGAINST Tarrant County’s motion to terminate Brianna’s parental rights. 

To date, neither Brianna nor her legal team has received anything from CPS in writing, stating they’re dropping the termination case. The judge’s hands are also tied until the University of Texas at Arlington falls their pending charges against Brianna.  Sadly, we have not received the support from Arlington NAACP Chair Alisa Simmons that we expected.
