More new research has confirmed that "cash is safe to use" and Australians are listening.

New research released by the European Central Bank reinforces advice from the Bank of England, the Royal Australian Mint, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand that “cash is safe to use.”

COVID-19 is transmitted via respiratory droplets in the air and the ECB confirms that the virus is transferred from cash to human fingers in tiny quantities, below what would be needed to be infectious.

“Our novel transferability testing results, which have not previously been reported in the available published literature, show that the SARS-CoV-2 virus is only transferred from cash to the human finger in very low quantities. The levels are below what would be needed to be infectious ...”

The research also reviews previous studies including from the CSIRO (Australia) and states categorically:

“… cash does not contribute to the spread of COVID-19.”

ECB Occasional Paper No. 259 concludes that:

“Based on our test results, recent scientific literature on SARS-CoV-2 transferability and also our previous findings on the avian flu and swine flu viruses, it can be concluded that the risk of transmission via banknotes and coins is very low, and that cash is safe to use.”
