The Issue
Please consider joining the Upper Dam Pond Conservation Association in supporting the sale of 0 Meeting Street to the Coventry Land Trust to protect the local watershed and the surrounding communities.
What is a Watershed?
It is a land area where water collects and eventually flows to areas such as reservoirs, bays, and the ocean. It can contain sensitive attributes that need protection. The Anthony Brook Watershed is 236 acres bounded by Gervais St, Boston St, Driftwood Dr and the South Fork of the Pawtuxet River at the old Anthony Mills. This watershed contains two lakes, five acres of Town-owned woodlands and a 14-acre property known as 0 Meeting St.
Why It Is Important
0 Meeting St is part of the last undeveloped watershed in East Coventry. It provides flood control with two significant level dams for Washington St Rt 117. It is a water sanctuary for marsh birds and plants. It is a historic area with buildings and remnants from Capwell Lumber Mills in the 1700’s, Anthony Mills Tool Making in 1805, and the Icehouse in the 1920’s. Private owners are selling the land that the potential owner may sell for housing development.
Efforts for Protection
Past building efforts in the Town have relied on the TRC and Planning Commission for review and approval. These Town bodies may not have the knowledge or experience to understand the ramifications of building in such a sensitive area.
The Land Trust and Conservation Commission are working together and now understand the value and history of this property. The Land Trust wants to purchase it for future protection.
Rationale and Recommendation
1. The Anthony Brook Watershed is the last undeveloped watershed in Eastern Coventry. Tiogue Lake and Mishnock Pond are already under attack by development.
2. The Anthony Brook Watershed is home to some of Coventry’s most precious historical remnants and artifacts.
3. The Anthony Brook Watershed is a haven for flora and fauna. It contains an undisturbed brook and a vernal pool. It has Eagles, Ospreys, Otter and recreational opportunities with a Town beach.
4. The Anthony Brook Watershed protects life and property from flooding downstream to a busy roadway (Rt117), businesses and residences.
5. This 0 Meeting St property is an integral part of the watershed and worth protecting for future generations. Allowing the Coventry Land Trust to purchase the property will allow that to happen.
