Youth Message for the Nairobi Conference | Parliamentary Question on SSD (29 Nov Campaign Update)

◆Japan Youth Team members released a video message ahead of the Nairobi Conference

This week on the 25-26th of November in Nairobi, Kenya, the international community convened for the 5th International Conference on the Safe Schools Declaration. The two-day Conference welcomed over 350 participants from the UN Member States, the UN agencies, academia, as well as the child and youth advocates and international NGOs, including a member from the SSD Japan Campaign.

Ahead of the Conference, the Campaign Youth Team members created a video message, that calls upon the world leaders on the importance of endorsing and implementing the Declaration. A part of their video message was displayed along with testimonies from other countries’ child & youth advocates.

◆Parliamentary Question: Both Houses in Japan’s National Diet discussed the Safe Schools Declaration

Last week on the 20th of November in the House of Councillors, and this week on the 28th in the House of Representatives, Japan’s parliamentarians raised questions on the Declaration. Respectively, Mr. Daisaku Hiraki addressed his questions to the Defense Minister Mr. Shinjiro Koizumi, and Mr. Katsuhide Nishizono to the Foreign Affairs Minister Mr. Toshimitsu Motegi.

Within the exchange, the MoFA Minister Mr. Motegi made a remark on hinderances to Japan’s endorsement, that “[they] would like to resolve those [hinderances] that can be resolved, and give considerations to whether Japan can endorse [the Declaration].”

We find the Minister’s remark on the willingness to “give considerations” on the Declaration endorsement a major progress from the past official remarks.
We will continue our advocacy work and deliver all of your signatures & voices to Japan’s policymakers, whilst the petition campaign runs through the end of year 2025.
