This November: We are encouraging Japan to attend the Nairobi Conference! (3 Nov Campaign Update)

◆ We are communicating with the Government of Japan to encourage their attendance at the upcoming Nairobi Conference!

On the 25th and 26th of this November, countries around the world are invited for the Fifth International Conference on the Safe Schools Declaration in Nairobi, Kenya.

The Conference is held mostly every two years since 2015 when the Declaration was opened for endorsement. It serves as the global stocktaking on the progress and challenges in the SSD implementation, and aims to enhance the work of the international community to protect education in armed conflicts.
Following the Conferences in Norway (2015), Argentina (2017), Spain (2019), and Nigeria (2021), the Nairobi Conference marks its fifth convention on the decade-long Declaration.

The Nairobi Conference will bring together representatives from the UN Member States, the UN agencies, academia, as well as the child and youth advocates and international NGOs.
The two-day Conference is expected to feature implementation updates from endorsing countries in both the policy framework and on-ground; testimonies from children and teachers affected by conflict; and legal analysis on the International Humanitarian Law and the Safe Schools Declaration. Participants will also discuss how to strengthen accountability to ensure better protection of education in emergencies.

Attendance at the Nairobi Conference presents a unique opportunity to actively participate in the global efforts to protect citizens, children and teachers, and to announce the SSD endorsement, joining the network of 121 endorsing countries.

Currently, the SSD Japan Campaign is amplifying our communication with the Government of Japan to urge their attendance at the Nairobi Conference as well as their endorsement for the Safe Schools Declaration.
We are also expecting to submit your signatures before the Conference to the Japanese ministries and policy-makers.
