Monday night, I attended Delta Council’s regular meeting where our bylaw proposal to ban the trade of shark fins in Delta was on the agenda. It was the only one out of 20 proposals presented that was directly addressed, this is great news and a testament to how important your support is! Various council members discussed the bylaw and voiced their opinions. They agree to stand by a motion passed in 2012 to lobby the provincial and federal governments to take steps to prohibit the import, possession, sale, and distribution of shark fins. They also agreed that they would look further into the 2012 report as well as the external correspondence (our bylaw proposal). There was also talk of looking into what type of bylaw could potentially be put in place (fingers crossed, this is what we're actually asking for). But no commitment has been made yet. While I think it's a great idea for Delta to lobby the provincial and federal government on this matter, this is something that was said to have been done in 2012/2013 - and no concrete results have come from it yet. When I spoke to the senior policy analyst for the city of Delta in March he told me he was unaware of any response from senior levels of government on Delta’s correspondence. Let's hope we get results this time around! And let's be honest: if I was happy with the motion endorsed in 2012 to NOT place a bylaw locally, I would never have started this petition/proposal. While I am slightly disappointed that the council is still sticking to that answer for the moment, I am hopeful that they will further investigate previous reports, my proposal, and do the right thing by passing and implementing a bylaw. I will continue to be in close contact with council and staff in the City of Delta, and trust that this issue will be addressed and resolved in the next Delta Council's regular meeting. I trust Delta can be a leader in banning the trade of shark fins.
