The day after Indigenous People’s Day we have some disappointing news for you.
We recently learned that a federal appeals court has denied the injunction request filed by the Standing Rock Sioux tribe, asking that construction on the pipeline be stopped. Though construction near our reservation has paused in response to the Obama administration’s request earlier this month, this pause is voluntary – we want legal protection to stop Dakota Access from beginning construction again. Today we were denied that most basic request.
But that’s not enough to stop the biggest movement of indigenous people in decades. Since nearby construction was paused, Standing Rock activists and allies have been traveling to several other construction sites to stop the project with our bodies. If our government won’t defend our water and earth, the people must.
Yesterday our friend Shailene was present at one of these actions and was arrested while peacefully walking to her RV to grab a jacket. She livestreamed the whole thing, and you can watch her be arrested towards the end of this recording: http://bit.ly/2drdDnj.
We thank Shailene for her continued dedication to our cause. We are all doing everything we can to keep her and all of our friends and allies safe while we fight to protect our water.
If you’d like, leave a message of support for the water defenders in the comments and we’ll make sure it gets to everyone!
Thank you,
Bobbi Jean and Anna
