COAST Update #4 | NOAA Building Sale Postponed!

K KelleherPacific Grove, CA, United States
Nov 19, 2021

Dear Friends of COAST:

Since our last update we’ve created quite a buzz! We’ve also made real progress toward preserving the NOAA property at 1352 Lighthouse Avenue in Pacific Grove.

With our urging, Congressman Panetta reached out to NOAA, which is now requiring an historical and cultural resources review to ensure compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act before any sale or transfer of the property. The sale is postponed until at least spring 2022! This positive development gives us time to generate more support for transforming the former NOAA laboratory, with its Ray Troll sea life murals, into a Center for Ocean Art, Science and Technology (COAST).

Save the Date:
On Tuesday February 15, 2022 from 7-8 pm, COAST will present a program about our mission at the monthly meeting of Friends of Hopkins Marine Station/Stanford University. Ray Troll will participate! The Friends of Hopkins Lecture Series is currently being offered via Zoom, free and open to the public. Watch for more information about the presentation with a registration link.

We are so grateful to all our supporters, and once again want to thank the Moss Landing Marine Labs Quilters led by Naval Reserve Officer Donna Skaggs-Kline. The Monterey Herald carried a full-color piece about their inspiring quilts featuring the splendid murals that grace the building (see attached). These beautiful works created to fund scholarships are now drawing attention to our cause. Thank you Moss Landing Marine Labs Quilters!

Please help spread the word!

Best regards,

COAST Steering Committee
