Remove the Stonewall Jackson Statue at the WV Capitol Complex in Charleston, WV

The Issue

In light of the current protests for racial equality and the removal of Confederate statues around our country, we are petitioning the State of West Virginia and the City of Charleston to remove the statue of Stonewall Jackson from the Capitol grounds.

Stonewall Jackson was a General in the Confederate Army and was known as the right-hand man of Robert E. Lee.

We believe that this statue celebrates a history of racism in our country and in our state and for that reason needs to be removed immediately. This is not the first time that that citizens of our state have petitioned for the removal of this statue. In light of the forthcoming removal of the Robert E. Lee statue in Richmond, VA we believe that this is the perfect time to remove this one as well.

These monuments demonstrate to the younger generation what it looks like to be a hero in our country and in our state. This man was not a hero. He fought in a war that was caused by racism and that divided our nation.

We can do better. We should use this space to memorialize someone who deserves to be remembered throughout all of history.
