Ensure student parents can access the lactation accommodations they need on campus
The Issue
All students should be able to nurse or pump milk for their children without jeopardizing their access to education.
Currently, lactation accommodations are provided to students inconsistently on California's community college and California State University campuses. Many students who are nursing or pumping milk are faced with three unjust options: do so in uncomfortable places, discontinue nursing or pumping altogether, or leave college.
AB 2785 requires that California campuses provide lactating students with a private, secure room (other than a restroom) to nurse or pump milk, and it ensures that no student will ever again incur an academic penalty for taking time to nurse or pump milk.
