Yesterday, our petition hit 300,000 signatures. And more importantly, Florida Gov. Rick Scott signed the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act into law. Naturally, the NRA filed a lawsuit within hours to block it from taking effect. The NRA is lying when it claims to protect the rights of people 18-21, because the organization does not care at all about gun owners. It 100% exists to support gun companies sell as many guns as possible. Not much has changed in the deadlocked political world, but the public still has the power to create change through collective will. Because media attention on Corporate America's complicity in gun violence has drifted to other issues over the last week, companies like Amazon breathe a sigh of relief. Jeff Bezos thinks they've survived the backlash. The company has written off criticism as the incoherent, unorganized, unrealistic rants of radicals who want too much too quickly, don't understand the Bill of Rights, and don't see what Amazon's real role is in commerce and society. But we do know. We know very well that there's a difference between being an open platform for free speech (like Facebook or Twitter or a public square) and providing direct promotion for an organization that has no purpose other than selling more guns (which is what Amazon does). We do know the NRA has its own communications channels to sell more product and silencing them everywhere is not the answer. The first 15 minutes of fame for this movement may have passed, but we aren't accepting Amazon's obstinate position and rejection of engagement with customers. We're not done. So... 1. If the NRA is going to keep demonizing the 40 million Americans with mental health issues as the cause of gun violence, please donate your Amazon refund to the National Alliance on Mental Health. I got $45.07 back from Amazon and sent it right over to NAMI. https://ifundraise.nami.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=donate.event&eventID=503&referrer=WEBDG&utm_source=HomepageButton&utm_medium=website&utm_campaign=DonationTracking 2. Keep sharing this petition with friends and on social media. Keep asking them to #CancelAmazon and do so yourself, if you haven't already. Here's a direct link to tweet at Jeff Bezos & Amazon telling them that we haven't forgotten...and that we'll be delivering the petition in-person. That's right. If Amazon wants to deliver its packages and Alexa personal assistants to your doorstep, we'll deliver your voice to their front door in Seattle in a few weeks. https://ctt.ec/v8eQG More to come and thanks for your help so far.
