This morning, we crossed a line, reaching a quarter of a million signatures. And at noon EST, in a little under an hour, Amazon will cross an even bigger line. They'll have spent one full week of silence on this issue. One full week of failing to offer the slightest acknowledgement that their promotion of the NRA is something more - something very different from their promotion of any other source of information or news. The NRA and the politicians they've bought are claiming that this type of consumer-led action is tantamount to an attack on the First Amendment and free speech. And they are potentially right, as we've received lots of notes asking us to also ask Amazon to stop selling Trump items and stop linking to Breitbart News. That may sound great to many of you, but that's where we hit the slippery slope and must contain this request for removal to NRA TV. If not, Amazon will receive the same requests from conservatives for Planned Parenthood or MSNBC radical animal rights groups. The fight can go on and on between these polarized liberal and conservative groups. Shouting down the opposition will only worsen our situation. Stay focused on the NRA for right now. We'll all get to other problems soon enough. In spite of their spin, the facts are clear on why Amazon's stand is so far outside the norm of ethical practice: 1. The NRA does not represent gun owners. 2. 90% of gun owners are not members. 3. The NRA does represent gun manufacturers. 4. The NRA has one purpose, to sell more guns. 5. NRA TV is their biggest platform to increase gun sales. 6. NRA members are welcome to watch all the NRA TV they want, on the NRA's website. 7. Amazon enables and encourages customers to watch NRA TV by carrying it on their services. Enacting companywide policies isn't very hard if the CEO embraces the philosophy of corporate social responsibility. Clearly, Mr. Bezos can't even be bothered to ask one of his spokespeople to make a simple statement. He does not care about any of us or the children in our schools. Ethical stands against corporations don't usually work and plenty of people who signed this petition will not follow through on their commitment to ending their relationship with Amazon. And that's ok. But we personally are following through and we really hope you will too. We'll miss some of the conveniences and features, and it's not that easy to just completely step away from a monopolistic company that has its tentacles into every aspect of our lives. But let's be real, there's nothing Amazon offers that you can't find elsewhere online, or better yet, in your local community. We are cancelling our memberships NOW, deleting all their apps (Amazon, Amazon Prime Now, Amazon Prime Video, Goodreads, Whole Foods), and going cold turkey. So, here's what you can do NOW: 1. Cancel your subscriptions to Amazon. Feel free to tweet or post online your screenshots and photos of your cancellations and deletions. 2. Check out and share this amazing video about our cause: https://twitter.com/Change/status/969473074780364800 3. Share the petition on Facebook: https://goo.gl/X4mHNi 4. Click here to tweet to Jeff about your action today: https://ctt.ec/19dcu 5. Use the #CancelAmazon hashtag on everything you do online. We'll wrap up this long post now. Thank you. Thank you.
