It’s been a long road since January 2018 when we delivered the petition with all of your signatures and comments to Governor Inslee’s office on American Indian Lobby Day. We would not be here today without you. Photo Credit: Staff at Inslee’s Office

On Wednesday, a day after signing a new Washington State law requiring 100% clean energy by 2045, Governor Inslee announced his opposition to two gas projects, including PSE’s proposed fracked gas LNG facility and a proposed methanol production facility in Kalama. Inslee withdrew his support for both projects, pointing to the accelerating threat of climate change and emerging science on the damaging impacts of natural gas production and distribution.

“I cannot in good conscience support continued construction of a liquefied natural gas plant in Tacoma or a methanol production facility in Kalama,” Inslee said. “I am no longer convinced that locking in these multidecadal infrastructure projects are sufficient to accomplishing what’s necessary.”

Puyallup Tribal Chairman Bill Sterud was quoted in the Puyallup Tribal News: "We welcome the governor’s strong and clear statement about the dire impacts of fossil fuels,” Sterud said. “Today he showed strong leadership on climate change.”

“It’s been a long battle,” Sterud said. Sterud and Councilmember Annette Bryan, who also has been fighting the project, thanked the allies who have stood with the Tribe. As of Wednesday, more than 40 Northwest Tribes, the Tribe’s Water Warriors, environment, faith, civil rights, immigration and social justice leaders have spoken against the project.

Thank you Governor Inslee for acknowledging that PSE's LNG project is taking us in the wrong direction. Our question to you is, what bold action will you take to make sure that the Tacoma LNG and the Kalama Methanol fracked gas projects are stopped once and for all? We need you to use strong leadership now so we can focus on the work of developing alternative energy sources and healing the Salish Sea.

Our work is not over and we will not stop until PSE’s fracked gas LNG project is shut down and the tank is dismantled. Together we are stopping PSE’s debacle and together we will heal the water.

YEHOW!
