Acquit Yoel Rodriguez of his charges.
El problema
44 year old Latin American Yoel Rodriguez, his wife and two children were shopping at Jacksonville's, Florida Walmart late Sunday when he was suddenly assaulted and injured by an off-duty Police Officer.
According to witnesses reports, Yoel and his family were walking to the line to pay for their groceries, when suddenly the wife remembered they were missing something. Yoel then backtracked to go look for said product.It is important to note that this was at 8:30 pm, Walmart's closing time. However, they were not, by far, the only clients left in the store. When Yoel and his family arrived to the checkout line, that is when Walmart employees resorted to getting help from an off-duty Officer who was at the store to help evacuate Yoel.
It is also important to note that neither Yoel nor his wife have a complete grasp of the English language. Therefore, Yoel could not understand why he suddenly was being asked to evacuate the premises. He kept repeating that 'they were going to pay', but the officer insisted on evacuating him and his family from the store. That is when the officer pushed the shopping cart into Yoel's young child, making the tense situation tenser. The officer attempted to physically grab Yoel's arm to evacuate him. Yoel still couldn't understand what was happening and repeatedly said 'Don't touch me, don't touch me' in Spanish. He kept pulling away from the Officer, until you can see that in the video, the Officer decides to punch him in the face.
This is clearly use of excessive force by the authority. He did not attempt to de-escalate the situation, find a translator and explain the situation to Yoel. Yoel's wife repeatedly told the officer 'Spanish, spanish' in hopes he would understand that they didn't have a grasp on English. However, the officer refused to acknowledge her and her statements, Language barrier is never an excuse or justification for violence against civilians. Florida has a growing population of Spanish speaking individuals, the officer could have decided to look for a Spanish speaking employee, or even client, to help defuse the situation. Instead, he resorted to physical violence to arrest an extremely lost and confused Yoel.
It is extremely important to note that Yoel was arrested on battery charges, but he is the only one that left with a broken, bloody nose and two black eyes.The Officer left seemingly uninjured.
We demand Justice for Yoel Rodríguez, we demand he be acquitted of his charges. This is not behaviour that is acceptable from law enforcement.

Según informes de los testigos, Yoel y su familia caminaban hacia la caja para pagar por sus compras, cuando de repente la esposa recordó que les hacía falta algo. Yoel decidió devolverse para buscar dicho producto. Es importante tener en cuenta que esto fue a las 8:30 pm, hora de cierre de Walmart. Sin embargo, no eran los únicos clientes que quedaban en la tienda. Cuando Yoel y su familia llegaron a la cola, ahí fue cuando los empleados de Walmart recurrieron a la ayuda de un oficial fuera de servicio que estaba en la tienda para ayudar a evacuar a Yoel.
También es importante tener en cuenta que ni Yoel ni su esposa tienen una comprensión completa del Inglés. Por lo tanto, Yoel no podía entender por qué de repente le pedía el policía que evacuara las instalaciones. Yoel le repetía que "iban a pagar", pero el oficial insistió en evacuarlo a él y a su familia de la tienda. Fue entonces cuando el Oficial empujó el carrito de compras hacia el niño de Yoel, efectivamente agrediendo al pequeño. La situación, ya tensa, se tensionó aún más. El oficial intentó agarrar físicamente el brazo de Yoel para evacuarlo. Yoel todavía no podía entender lo que estaba sucediendo y repetidamente decía 'No me toques, no me toques'. Siguió evadiendo a el Oficial, hasta que se puede ver que en el video, el Oficial decide golpearlo en la cara.
Esto es claramente uso de fuerza excesiva por parte de la autoridad. No intentó reducir la situación, buscar un traductor y explicarle la situación a Yoel. La esposa de Yoel a varias repeticiones le dijo a el oficial 'Español, español' para hacerle entender que no comprendían inglés. El oficial decide ignorarla. La barrera de idioma nunca es excusa o justificación para la violencia contra la población civil. Florida tiene una población creciente de hispanoparlantes, el Oficial pudo fácilmente haber decidido buscar un empleado hispanoparlante, o incluso un cliente, para ayudar a traducir y a calmar la situación. En cambio, recurrió a la violencia física para arrestar a Yoel, quien estaba extremadamente perdido y confundido
Es importante tener en cuenta que Yoel fue arrestado por cargos de asalto con agravantes o asalto violento, pero él es el único que terminó con la nariz quebrada, ensangrentada y dos ojos morados. El oficial terminó, aparentemente, ileso.
Exigimos justicia para Yoel Rodríguez, exigimos que sea absuelto de sus cargos. Este no es un comportamiento aceptable de la policía.
