Stop The “Jax” Sculpture

Beau Norton started this petition to Jacksonville City Council and

Jacksonville is facing ridicule on a national level because of the “Jax” sculpture and the project hasn’t even begun. Liking or not liking the statue is subjective, but realizing that it invites shame and jokes at our expense is not.

Our city has an arts community full of unrecognized talent. Selecting one of our own would explode our arts scene and our economy, not to mention that a local artist would put every penny back into local businesses. The sculpture then would not just be for Jacksonville but from Jacksonville.

Jacksonville is better then this.

***To clarify the funding concern. The sculpture in question will reportedly not be created at the taxpayers expense. Instead an outside sponsor will be funding the project, so the scope of this petition is specifically the sculpture itself. Not whether or not a sculpture is featured in the park nor what should be done with that funding. Also, funds for the park itself, have already been earmarked by the city and so is also outside of the scope of this petition.***

I would highly recommend going to oneparkjax.com and watching the second video down starting at the 32:00 mark. More information can be found about the sculpture as well as the funding.

Many thanks to @jaxarcana for your assistance in the petition! Also, thank you to the people with the One Park Jax project who have been more then gracious in the face of this petition. I truly believe we all want to make Jacksonville an even greater city!

In an effort to provide even ground for both sides of the argument and to further the discussion, I wanted to add context directly from the artist about the sculpture without commentary.

*** Per the artist ***

The sculpture is set to be 151 feet tall, or 1822 inches, which corresponds to Jacksonville's founding date (June 5, 1822). The total linear length of the sculpture is 310 feet, which represents the length of St. Johns River in nautical miles.

"That's the beauty of public art, it creates dialogue and discussion" shares JEFRË. "Everyone has an interpretation for it, it’s called “Jax” but IT’s NOT A SIGN, font or letters. It’s a fluid form of water rising up from the river into the City skyline that forms curving shapes reminiscent of the oxbows and bends of the St. John’s River. From every view point, the river form is a completely different sculpture and reflection of a timeline in history. If you think it looks like Jax then great but if you think it looks like a heart, a anchor , a figure eight knot, a letter “J” , lox, lex, love, steel spaghetti or paperclip then that’s fine as well. “ Diversity of the people of Jacksonville and it’s direct relationship to the river has changed numerous times over the course of history and will continue to do so. It’s my hope the it will have the similar effect of how people will interpret and engage with the sculpture today, tomorrow and forever into the future. Just like a river, the “Jax” Icon is a container of memory.”
