Remove Confederate statue in front of Jackson County Library

Remove Confederate statue in front of Jackson County Library
The Issue
Jackson County, NC is mostly a loving and diverse community. We are home to Western Carolina University and love all the diversity the college brings to our area. Jackson county has citizens of all races. The Confederate Statue in front of the Public Library is a contradiction to our values. These statues glorify white supremacy and serve as a constant reminder to our black brothers and sisters of their oppression every time they drive down Main Street.
This particular statue was erected during the Jim Crow era, which was a time intended to further segregate the people and keep black people from prospering. In fact, the statue does not even fairly represent Jackson County’s involvement in the Civil War, since Jackson County was divided in the war, never showing full support for either side.
While the country is in pain over the senseless police brutality and murder committed on people of color, there are several white supremacists guarding the statue while others are peacefully protesting the brutality. Some have yelled out racist remarks to protesters. This is proof that white supremacy is alive and well in Jackson County. We don’t need a statue to validate hateful feelings. We need change. Everyone should feel welcome here. We demand the statue removal.
