Open Pools in Illinois for Competitive Athletes

The Issue

The pools need to open for swimmers to train in the state of Illinois.  While opening pools for the general public may not be possible right now due to the logistical challenges that brings forth, opening pools for swim teams is logical and safe. Swim teams have control over how many swimmers can practice at once, and can safely space them in lanes accordingly. Other measures, such as swimming without equipment, and using protective barriers between lanes at each end can make this transition back to training safer for all swimmers in this state.

The CDC has found no evidence of COVID-19 spreading through treated water in swimming pools. The weather is getting warmer, the pool is safer than shopping at Walmart, Target, or Home Depot. The majority of Illinois students and swimmers are already out of school.

Coaches from all over the state are resourceful, and if given the opportunity, can rise to the occasion to run practices in an efficient and safe manner in partnership with the organizations that they are a part of.

It's time that we open pools up for athletes and show that we can do it the right way...the safe way..and with a spirit of hope and positivity in a time where this is what athletes, parents, and coaches need.

Bottom line, other states around the country have already begun to open their pools, which will inevitably put our swimmers at a competitive disadvantage. It's time to understand that we can make this happen, and safely.

 Thank you for your support.
