IXL needs to be banned.

The Issue

IXL is a “learning platform”, that tons of teachers love and students hate. Now some people who do know IXL might say, “It doesn’t need to be banned!” Or, “But it is so easy for me to use with my students!” Well for teachers, yes it can be so easy to see what strengths and weaknesses students may have; however have you considered what the students have to actually do? I myself am a middle school, soon to be high-school, student and I have a multitude of problems with IXL. I, as an AuDHD child with diagnosed generalized anxiety, struggle in my math class because of IXL; similar to other neurodivergent children and even neurotypical children. IXL has this system. At first while answering questions on a lesson you can get 10 points for getting a question right and losing 2 or 3 for getting one wrong. Then when you get to 70% you gain about 5 and lose 7. Finally at 80 you earn 2 or 3 and lose 10 or even 15 points. This system that is supposed to help students learn is making them more anxious of getting even just one question wrong than actually teaching. Multiple students have said that they would look up answers or use A.I. just so they can get it over with. Schools have had to invest more than thousands of dollars because, students tablets would end up broken. The reason for this is that they couldn’t finish at least one IXL and got so upset they would hit, throw, or even cry so much and damage their school tablet. Kids have had full on panic attacks from their IXL. Is this what we want for students? No, but teachers use it because it’s easy for them.
