Michael Scadron, a retired U.S. Department of Justice Counsel, provides evidence of shocking parallels. “A monumental absurdity that is an affront to due process and the right to a fair trial,” says Scadron of the Knox and Sollecito hearings. In his comparison of the modern Italian legal system and the 1890’s French Army, Scadron points out that the mistakes of a few were defended by a system that resisted transparency. In each case, authorities knew who the real perpetrator was, yet chose to railroad innocent people. Moreover, Dreyfus, Knox and Sollecito are all victims of character assassination, via the media, designed to influence public opinion. All three have been denied due process and access to evidence, particularly evidence manipulated to show guilt. All were incarcerated as innocent people. Protecting the army’s honor was the “driving force” behind Dreyfus’s persecution and, as Scadron notes, the same battle is raging in Italy’s justice system today. The real killer's final ruling made it impossible for Knox and Sollecito to be found innocent in any court, denying them their constitutional right of due process.
