It’s Time for Chuck Schumer to Step Down

It’s Time for Chuck Schumer to Step Down
The Issue
The longest government shutdown in U.S. history just ended. It did not end with a win for working people, but with a deal that left millions without the healthcare relief they were promised. And it happened under the watch of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.
Now, members of Schumer’s own party are calling for change. Eight Democratic-aligned senators broke from his leadership and voted with Republicans to push through a spending bill that failed to extend critical healthcare subsidies. The shutdown was supposed to be a stand for the people. Instead, it ended in surrender.
For progressives and everyday Democrats across the country, this was the last straw.
We are calling on Senator Chuck Schumer to step down as Senate Majority Leader so that new leadership can take the reins. Leadership that will fight for bold, popular policies. Leadership that listens to the movement, not corporate donors. Leadership that unites, inspires, and delivers.
Senator Schumer has led the caucus for eight years. In that time, Democratic voters have made clear that they want real action on healthcare, climate, housing, and justice. But time and again, we have seen watered-down compromises and lost opportunities. Schumer’s failure to hold the caucus together, along with the perception that he privately blessed the very deal he publicly opposed, has eroded trust when we need unity the most.
Meanwhile, a new generation of Democrats is rising. Leaders like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rep. Ro Khanna, and Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani are proving what it means to speak plainly, fight hard, and stay accountable to the people.
We need leadership in the Senate that reflects that energy, that urgency, and that courage.
This is not a personal attack. It is a recognition that we are in a different political era. Our crises are urgent and our window for action is narrow. It is time for a leader who meets the moment.
Tell Senate Democrats to thank Senator Schumer for his service and choose someone ready to fight for the future.
