On 4th January I met up with TfL's Lead Sponsor for the area at the crossing. I presented the petition, and he was particularly interested in the comments, many of which are very powerful.
TfL's view is that, because of the amount of traffic on Holloway Road/Palmer Place/Drayton Park, it's not straightforward to put crossings without causing too much vehicle and bus congestion.
TfL's answer is to develop a plan to provide crossings at Palmer Place / Drayton Park in conjunction with changes to the layout of the Holloway Road / Liverpool Road junction, the idea being that these together can provide crossings without causing too much congestion.
TfL proposed a scheme like this in 2010. This did not go ahead - there were objections to parts of the plan (notably restricting right turns out of Liverpool Rd as well as Palmer Place).
TfL are now working on a plan which should avoid these problems.
I am copying a summary from TfL below.
Hopefully, we should here more about TfL's plan in March/April this year.
In the mean time - there are lots of things we can do:-
a) I'm meeting Islington Council later this month and will take the opportunity to explain why this is so important.
b) Please do encourage more people to sign the petition - and leave comments which are really useful.
c) Please do let your local councillors know you support a crossing here and encourage them to support it.
I'll post a further update after my meeting with Islington in a few weeks...
"(T)hanks for the petition details, and the fact that so many local residents added personal comments rather than just signing adds to the power of the document.
(T)he vast majority of key signalled junctions in Islington have protected green person crossings and this site remains one of the few… without such facility.
We concur that there are significant issues for both pedestrians and for the heavy flow of east west cyclists and these issues are particularly strong for more vulnerable users. For these reasons we sought to deliver a scheme in 2010 but it stalled for some reasons as we discussed. However over the past year we have kicked off a new piece of work which seeks to overcome/avoid some of the issues that caused issue in 2010.
(…)
We indicated that by the Spring given a fair wind we will have a layout ( possibly with options) that we can start sharing for discussion. We would do this first with colleagues at Islington --- Councillors and officers."
