Israel to allow The United States to provide Ukraine with Iron Dome defense system

כיפת ברזל הינה מערכת הגנה אזרחית נגד רקטות קצרות טווח. המערכת היא פרויקט אמריקאי-ישראלי משותף, ואספקתה למדינה אחרת מחייבת גם את ארה"ב וגם את ישראל להסכים. אוקראינה ביקשה לרכוש את מערכת כיפת ברזל, ובעוד ארה"ב הסכימה, ישראל סירבה. הדאגה העיקרית של ישראל היא לשמור על מערכת יחסים טובה עם פוטין, בהתחשב בכך שהצבא הרוסי יושב בסוריה השכנה ומספק לישראל גמישות מבצעית שם, ומונע התיישבות של כוחות איראנים בסוריה.

כישראלי-אמריקאי שביקר בישראל בקיץ 2014 עם משפחתי במהלך ירי הרקטות של חמאס אז, חיי וחיי משפחתי ניצלו מספר פעמים הודות לכיפת ברזל.

מדוע ישראל צריכה לאפשר לאוקראינה לרכוש מידית את כיפת ברזל?

זו מערכת הגנתית ב 100%, למקרה שהצבא הרוסי יורה בטעות על אזרחים באוקראינה. המערכת משמידה את הרקטה באוויר, לפני שהיא פוגעת בשטח המכוסה, ללא נפגעים לאזרחים וגם לא לצד היורה.

Iron Dome is a civilian-defense system against short-range rockets. The system is a joint American-Israeli project, and its supply to another country requires both the US and Israel to agree. Ukraine requested to purchase the Iron Dome system, and while the US agreed, Israel refused. Israel's primary concern is with keeping a good relationship with Putin, given that the Russian military is sitting in neighboring Syria and providing Israel with operational flexibility there, preventing the settling of Iranian forces in Syria.

As an Israeli-American who visited Israel in the summer of 2014 with my family during the Israeli-Hammas conflict back then, my life and my family life have been saved multiple times thanks to Irom-Dome.

Why Israel should allow Ukraine to purchase Iron Dome right away?

1. It’s a 100% defensive system, in case the Russian army accidentally fires at civilians in Ukraine. The system destroys the rocket in the air, before it hits the covered area, with no casualties to civilians and even to the firing side.
2. Appeasing Putin is wrong. It’s not different than how Neville Chamberlain attempted to appease Hitler in the 1930s, and we know how that ended. What prevents Putin from claiming he needs to send his army to Israel next, to “help” the 1,500,000 Russian-speaking people there?
3. It’s the right thing to do, for the people of Ukraine who are fighting to preserve freedom and democracy in their country. “Those who show compassion for the cruel will end up being cruel to the compassionate” -  Rabbi Elazar, Midrash Tanchuma for Parashat Mitzora
