The owner of a greyhound who tested positive for Caffeine on two occasions last year has been fined just €100.
The prohibited substance was found in a sample taken from 3-year-old Johnstown Magie after a race at Youghal track on 24th February 2024. The same substance was again detected in this greyhound after a race at Youghal track on 13th July.
In the February race, Johnstown Magie finished second with prize money of €110, while in the July race, she finished fifth, with prize money of €90.
The dog’s registered owners are listed as Donal Hanrahan and Gerard Hanrahan of Johnstown, Glanworth, Co. Cork.
According to the latest November 2024 Greyhound Racing Control Committee report, joint owner Gerard Hanrahan "outlined the greyhound Johnstown Magie was fed its breakfast on the morning of each of the races which consisted of toast, fish and tea which has been the feeding regime for many years. He highlighted that their greyhounds have been tested on numerous occasions over the years and there has never been a positive caffeine sample..."
The Control Committee took note of a statement from Pat Herbert of Greyhound Racing Ireland "where he outlined the information referencing the dangers of feeding tea and caffeine related products to greyhounds that were available to Mr. Hanrahan at the time from website publications to industry advice published on the race programme".
The Greyhound Racing Control Committee "imposed a sanction payment of €100 on Mr. Hanrahan" and stated that the prizemoney of €110 and €90 won by the greyhound Johnstown Magie "is forfeited".
After the 13 July race, Johnstown Magie was next used in racing on 11 September 2024. She has been used in 12 races since then, winning four of them. She was most recently seen in the “This Runs Deep 550” race at Youghal track on 8th February 2025 when she finished second.

ACTION ALERT
Don’t go greyhound racing. Please join us in urging the government to STOP the massive grants that are propping up this dog-killing gambling activity. Since 2001, Greyhound Racing Ireland has received €366,986,146 million in funding, including €18.2 million for 2023, €19 million for 2024 and €19.82 million for 2025. This is unacceptable and must be stopped.
Tell the leaders of Fianna Fail, Fine Gael and Sinn Fein to stop supporting this funding.
