The owner of a greyhound who tested positive for Ketoprofen following a race at Tralee track has been fined just €50.
The latest November 2024 Greyhound Racing Control Committee report outlined that owner Sheila Higgins (of Ballybeggan, Tralee, Co. Kerry) was not in attendance at a hearing but that she provided evidence that “her husband administered the substance Ketoprofen by means of rubbing Fastum 2.5% w/w gel into the greyhound three days before the race due to a sore muscle”.
The prohibited substance was detected in “Sheilas Friend” after a race at Tralee track on 30th April 2024. On the day, the greyhound finished fifth in the “RCETS Traceability App 525” race, with €60 in prize money.
The Greyhound Racing Control Committee “imposed a sanction payment of €50 on Ms. Higgins” and stated that the prizemoney of €60 “is forfeited”.
Since 30th April 2024, Sheilas Friend has been used in 14 more races at Tralee track, most recently on 1st February 2025 when she finished first for a prize of €225.

ACTION ALERT
Don’t go greyhound racing. Please join us in urging the government to STOP the massive grants that are propping up this dog-killing gambling activity. Since 2001, Greyhound Racing Ireland has received €366,986,146 million in funding, including €18.2 million for 2023, €19 million for 2024 and €19.82 million for 2025. This is unacceptable and must be stopped.
Tell the leaders of Fianna Fail, Fine Gael and Sinn Fein to stop supporting this funding.
