Cork County Council is being urged to remove a greyhound track from its “Explore Cork” tourism app.

The council’s app is presenting a visit to Curraheen Park - a gambling venue where dogs suffer and die - as a “family fun” thing to do in Cork.

In an appeal to Cork County Council, we pointed to the decision by Fáilte Ireland and Tourism Ireland to stop promoting greyhound racing due to the suffering and deaths, and fears that the activity damages Ireland's reputation as a tourist destination.

“The track is listed as ‘family friendly’ but those visiting this gambling venue may witness the very upsetting sight of greyhounds falling and crying out in agony with injuries such as broken legs and wrists,” we stated.

Curraheen Park is one of the worst tracks in Ireland for dog injuries and deaths. 156 greyhounds suffered injuries there and 60 were killed by a track vet over the past seven years alone, sickening Greyhound Racing Ireland statistics show. Among the victims was a dog who died of a “suspected heart attack”. At tracks around Ireland in the same period, at least 2,146 greyhounds were injured and 715 killed.

Many more are also killed behind the scenes because they don’t make the grade. As revealed in RTE’s award-winning "Greyhounds running for their lives", around 6,000 greyhounds are killed every year simply because they are not fast enough to win. The documentary included horrifying scenes of greyhounds being delivered to a knackery where they were shot in the head and dumped into a skip. One dog was seen writhing on the ground as his merciless owner drove away https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYTb2qBjlMM

Last month, Cork’s official tourism website, “Pure Cork” responded positively to an appeal and removed Curraheen Park track from its website. Please join us in urging Cork County Council to show compassion for the dogs and follow suit.
