A big THANK YOU to The Metropole Hotel in Cork City for removing greyhound racing from its website.

Following an appeal from ICABS, the luxury 4-star hotel deleted the page which presented Curraheen Park greyhound track as a local attraction.

In our appeal to hotel management, we pointed out that Curraheen Park is one of the worst tracks in the country for dog injuries and deaths.

126 greyhounds suffered injuries there and 47 were killed by track vets in the past five years alone, we stated. Among the victims was a greyhound who died of a suspected heart attack. At tracks around Ireland in the same period, 1,891 greyhounds were injured and 625 were killed.

The figures represent only the tip of the iceberg - thousands more greyhounds are mercilessly killed every year because they don't make the grade.

As revealed in the "RTE Investigates: Greyhounds running for their lives" documentary last year, around 6,000 greyhounds are killed every year simply because they are not fast enough. It included shocking scenes of dogs being delivered to a knackery where they were shot in the head and dumped in a skip. One shot dog was seen writhing on the ground in agony as his merciless owner drove away. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYTb2qBjlMM

Thumbs up to The Metropole Hotel for its compassionate response. Find out more about the iconic hotel (which reopens on 13 July) at https://www.themetropolehotel.ie/

ACTION ALERT

No hotel should recommend greyhound racing to its guests, particularly in light of the fact that Failte Ireland and Tourism Ireland have stopped promoting greyhound racing due to fears that it damages Ireland's image as a tourist destination. Join us in urging these hotels to remove greyhound racing from their websites.

The Fitzwilton Hotel in Waterford is being asked to stop recommending a "night at the dogs" as a group activity in Waterford.
