The Green Party is calling for an end to the massive government grants that are keeping the cruel greyhound industry afloat.
In its 2020 pre-budget submission published this week, the party called for public funds to be redirected away from greyhound racing. Since 2001, more than a quarter of a billion euros of taxpayers’ money (including €16.8 million for 2019) has been handed over to the Irish Greyhound Board.
The Green Party also wants to see the betting tax increased from 2% to 3% which would raise €50 million.
In the submission, the Green Party says it would “provide €17 million in funding to environmental and animal welfare NGOs” and “increase the budget of the National Parks and Wildlife Service by €50 million.”
In 2018, the National Parks and Wildlife Service received just under €12 million (compared to €16 million for greyhound racing). In 2017, €11 million was given to the NPWS - €5 million less than the amount granted to greyhound racing.
The Greens also want to “develop at least an additional 18,000 hectares of high quality, native woodland in 2020 through afforestation incentives”. The €100 million cost of this would partly be covered by “charging VAT on fertiliser at the lower rate of 9% (€50 million)”.
