A big thank you to Family Carers Ireland for cancelling a planned fundraiser at Limerick greyhound track.
The charity - which provides support to family carers - made the positive move after being told about the cruelty and killing in Ireland’s nasty greyhound industry.
In a message to supporters this week, Family Carers Ireland stated: “We have cancelled the upcoming race night planned for 19th October. We have a new exciting event planned for 20th October.”
Please support this new fundraiser - “a family friendly afternoon of dancing and music with Mike Denver” at the West County Hotel in Ennis. Tickets are €15 and can be purchased online at https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/mike-denver-afternoon-dancing-tickets-70141488079 Donations can also be made to the charity at https://familycarers.ie/donate/
The Family Carers Ireland’s track fundraiser cancellation is the second one in the past week.
On Sunday, Arklow Rugby Club was praised for announcing that, following concerns by club members, it had cancelled a “greyhound racing gala night” fundraiser.
In a message published on Facebook, the club emphasised that it “does not condone any of the animal cruelty that exists within the greyhound racing industry” and that it would be organising an alternative fundraiser soon. Please look out for the club’s replacement fundraiser in the coming weeks and support it - http://www.arklowrugbyfc.com
More and more companies are also rejecting greyhound racing, including Applegreen, Barry's Tea, FBD Insurance, Galway Crystal, Botanica International, Hyde Irish Whiskey, Tesco Ireland, Toyota Ireland, Electric Ireland, Permanent TSB, Boston Scientific, GE Healthcare, Treacy’s Hotel Waterford, Maldron Hotel Limerick, ULearn English Language School, Apollo Language Centre, Voucher Cloud, Thomas Cook/Jet Tours, etc
As revealed in the recent RTE Investigates documentary, 6,000 greyhounds are mercilessly killed every year because they are too slow to win races - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYTb2qBjlMM In addition, dogs suffer injuries and are killed by track vets. In the past four years alone, 1,559 greyhounds have been injured and 506 were killed.
Greyhounds are also dying in dog pounds around Ireland. 53 greyhounds were destroyed in pounds last year, bringing to 2,782 the number of greyhounds killed in pounds in the past nine years.
We are appealing to all GAA clubs, schools and charities to show compassion and reject greyhound track fundraising. Such fundraisers are a major source of income for tracks - they take a significant commission on ticket sales and profit from gambling and food and drink sales on the night. Companies approached to sponsor races are asked to say NO and donate directly to the charity/sports club instead. This will not only be of greater benefit to the fundraising group but also avoid associating the company’s name with a cruel dog-killing industry which the Irish public wants ended.
Please join us in urging the Irish Government to stop ploughing millions of euros of taxpayers’ money into greyhound racing and instead redirect it to the health and homeless charities, sports clubs, hospitals, environmental groups and animal rescue centres crying out for funds.
URGENT ACTION ALERT
Say NO to the cruel greyhound industry - don't attend greyhound races or fundraisers/hen parties/office parties held at greyhound tracks
STOP THE STATE FUNDING FOR GREYHOUND RACING
Since 2001, the Irish Government has paid out around a quarter of a billion euros of taxpayers' money to greyhound racing, including €16.8 million for 2019. Following the shocking RTE Investigates revelations about cruelty and killing, it is time for these grants to be finally ended. Not a single cent more of public funds should end up in this shameful industry. Contact Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe now.
