Longford greyhound track has today announced that it is closing down.
In a statement published on Facebook, track management stated: “Longford Greyhound Stadium has announced today, with deep regret, that it is to cease operations at the end of August 2019. The stadium has been met with a number of challenging economic conditions over the last number of years, including falling attendances, a current requirement for expensive fire safety works and rising insurance costs…” https://www.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=2467280486827073&id=1543160992572365
It is the second track closure announcement in the past 24 hours. Yesterday, Lifford greyhound track in Donegal confirmed that it is closing down next week.
The announced closures come just weeks after the shocking RTE Investigates documentary exposed the horrors of the nasty greyhound industry, including the annual killing of 6,000 greyhounds who aren’t fast enough to win races.
It comes at a time when more and more people are saying NO to greyhound racing - evident in a 50 per cent drop in track attendance in recent years and an even greater fall in race sponsorship.
