Lifford greyhound track in Donegal has today announced that it is closing down.
In a message posted on Facebook, track management stated: “Due to an ongoing lack of support from the Irish Greyhound Board, we regretfully announce that Lifford Greyhound Stadium will be closing its doors permanently on August 17th.” https://www.facebook.com/LiffordRM/photos/a.405050406570019/618795041862220/
The closure of Lifford track has been expected for years. As reported by ICABS last year, the privately-owned track where dogs suffer and die was put up for sale for the second time in four years.
Sickening Irish Greyhound Board statistics show that since 2015, 51 greyhounds suffered injuries and 19 were killed by a track vet at Lifford stadium. These victims are among the more than 1,559 injured and 506 killed at tracks around Ireland in the same period.
The announced closure of the Lifford track comes just weeks after the shocking RTE Investigates documentary exposed the horrors of the nasty greyhound industry, including the annual killing of 6,000 greyhounds who aren’t fast enough to win races.
It comes at a time when more and more people are saying NO to greyhound racing - evident in a 50 per cent drop in track attendance in recent years and an even greater fall in race sponsorship. A drop in attendance at Lifford track was noted by one visitor, who commented on the Lifford Greyhound Stadium Facebook page: "I absolutely love this greyhound stadium but can't believe how quiet its gotten over the years..."
