Atualização do abaixo-assinadoIrish Government: Stop Giving Millions of Euro to Cruel Greyhound RacingThomas Cook removes greyhound stadium from Ireland itinerary

A big thank you to the Thomas Cook holiday company for today confirming that it has removed Shelbourne Park greyhound stadium from the itinerary of its Jet Tours Ireland trip.

Responding to an ICABS appeal, the company stated: “We are pleased to be able to inform you that we are amending the Jet Tours itinerary, so we no longer include a visit to Shelbourne Park.”

French-based Jet Tours had been bringing buses of tourists to the stadium during the Dublin leg of their trip to Ireland. In our appeal to Thomas Cook’s CEO, ICABS highlighted the “RTE Investigates: Greyhounds Running for Their Lives” documentary which revealed that 6,000 dogs are killed here each year because they're not fast enough to win - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYTb2qBjlMM

“We encourage Thomas Cook and Jet Tours to watch this documentary, show compassion for the dogs and permanently cease all tours to Shelbourne Park greyhound stadium,” we stated.

As well as the thousands of dogs killed every year for being too slow, dogs also suffer injuries and die at tracks. We told Thomas Cook that Shelbourne Park is one of the worst in the country for injuries and deaths. Since 2015, at least 146 greyhounds suffered injuries there and 36 were killed by a track vet, including 41 injuries and 12 deaths last year.

Thumbs up to Thomas Cook and Jet Tours for showing compassion and removing greyhound racing from the itinerary. They are the latest in a growing number of companies rejecting greyhound racing. These include Applegreen, Barry's Tea, FBD Insurance, Botanica International, Hyde Irish Whiskey, Tesco Ireland, Toyota Ireland, Permanent TSB, Boston Scientific, GE Healthcare, Treacy’s Hotel Waterford, Maldron Hotel Limerick, ULearn English Language School and Voucher Cloud.

Last September, ICABS identified 30 Supervalu supermarkets around Ireland which had sponsored greyhound racing over the past decade - https://www.facebook.com/banbloodsports/posts/1857546281027588 We contacted Supervalu Head Office with information about all the dog injuries and deaths in greyhound racing and urged the company to act. We received no response. It's time for Supervalu to take action to stop its local stores from supporting greyhound racing again. STOP THE STATE FUNDING FOR GREYHOUND RACING

Since 2001, the Irish Government has paid out around a quarter of a billion euros of taxpayers' money to greyhound racing, including €16.8 million for 2019. Following the shocking RTE Investigates revelations about cruelty and killing, it is time for these grants to be finally ended. Not a single cent more of public funds should end up in this shameful industry. Contact Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe now.
