"This is up there in the realms of the Tooth Fairy and Father Christmas": Nuala Donlon of Greyhound Action Ireland on the Joe Finnegan Show (Shannonside Radio, 30 July 2019) in a discussion about the taxpayer-funded greyhound industry's latest farcical announcement.
Described as "bordering on the ridiculous" by presenter Joe Finnegan, the Irish Greyhound Board's plan is to spend €1.6 million in setting up retirement homes or care centres around the country to deal with thousands of surplus dogs every year.
As revealed on the RTE Investigates programme, a report commissioned by the IGB revealed that around 6,000 greyhounds are killed every year because they are not fast enough to win races. The true figure is believed to be up to 10,000 dogs.
"The Irish Greyhound Board will be mentioning the word welfare in every second sentence because they will have to justify getting €16 million," Nuala Donlon stated on the show. "To set up even one of these care centres will cost a lot more than €1.6 million a year. Where is the money coming from for this? Is the Irish Government now going to, on the one hand, pump millions into an industry that's overbreeding dogs to the tune of 10,000 a year and then on the other hand pour more money into trying to find homes for all these dogs that they discard every year. It doesn't make sense. It's part of the damage limitation. Up until last week, they were denying the problem existed."
She added: "This money the government is giving to the greyhound industry needs now to be given to legitimate long-established rescues in this country to take over the rehoming of greyhounds and take away public funding for greyhound racing. Because otherwise, we are just going to go on perpetuating the problem year after year after year and it's not going to be solved by building the kind of centres they are proposing. It will only be solved when greyhound racing stops."
