The day after the shocking RTE Investigates programme exposed the Irish greyhound industry's hidden horrors, Tanaiste Simon Coveney (who said he hadn't watched it) stood up in Dail Eireann and described greyhound racing as an "important" sector which "needs to be supported" - See https://www.kildarestreet.com/debates/?id=2019-06-27a.220#g259
Simon Coveney is completely out of step with public opinion. After witnessing sickening scenes of animal cruelty on the RTE Investigates programme, the Irish public is now demanding an immediate end to the state support which is propping up this nasty industry (a quarter of a billion euros since 2001, including €16.8 million for 2019).
Simon Coveney is among the TDs who have been supporting the channelling of scarce public funds into racing. In 2016, 2017 and 2018, he voted in favour of the Horse and Greyhound Racing Fund Regulations which granted €80 million/€80 million/€84 million of taxpayers' money to horse and greyhound racing.
In June 2016, Simon Coveney was among the TDs who voted against Deputy Maureen O'Sullivan's bill which sought to ban cruel hare coursing.
Join us in telling Simon Coveney and the government that not a single cent more of taxpayers' money should be given to greyhound racing.
