Reinstate Alide Dasnois as Cape Times Editor

This petition had 2,155 supporters

We are shocked and outraged at the dismissal of Alide Dasnois as editor of the Cape Times. She has in recent years been one of the finest newspaper editor in South Africa. On a extremely limited budget, and with an eviscerated newsroom, the Cape Times has managed to report across the city and province, on stories that matter, and to maintain the paper's standing as the only read in town. Few traditional city papers can claim that.

Dasnois is fair, principled and incorruptible. She is also brave, as demonstrated by the fact that despite the change of ownership at the Cape Times she refused to cease publishing on Tina Joemat-Pettersson's improper and unethical award of an R800-million tender to a Sekunjalo subsidiary to manage the state's fishery vessels, a matter of self-evident public interest. We believe that this was the reason she was fired and we call upon Iqbal Survé to be honest about this.

It was Madiba who said: "A critical, independent and investigative press is the lifeblood of any democracy. It must have sufficient independence from vested interests to be bold and inquiring without fear or favour."

Powerful interests and politicians of all persuasions have been held accountable during Dasnois' tenure, and many will be breathing sighs of relief, but if this dismissal is allowed to stand the loss to the public will be significant.
